Looking at image and performance, it is slightly easier to discount Audi and Volkswagen, as these two (though spectacular in their own right) fall short of the might of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. This is when my personal choice would get a bit more difficult to make. For example, comparing the Mercedes-Benz SLK and the BMW 5 Series is a wonderful task, but deciding to choose one above the other is practically torturous.
